After more than a decade in the making, the Navi Mumbai Metro opened its first line in November 2023, finally giving the planned city its own rapid transit. Line 1 runs fully elevated for 11.1 kilometres from the commercial hub of CBD Belapur, through the fast-growing residential nodes of Kharghar, and on to Pendhar near the Taloja industrial belt. Built and owned by CIDCO, it has quickly become the backbone of internal travel in Navi Mumbai, easing pressure on the Sion–Panvel highway and connecting commercial centres with the affordable housing suburbs that have grown around them.
